Petition Letter: To Whom it may concern,
I am appealing my inability to drop POLS 110 FW21/22 & PHIL FW21/22 after the designated drop date. The extenuating circumstances that lead to this appeal are outlined below.
After consulting my family doctor in August 2021 and receiving her recommendation to discontinue my anti-depressant medication, I started my first semester at Queens University in September. My year started off well, and I was happy with my academic achievements overall. By November, the isolation, change, and ongoing stress of Covid 19, caused my mental health to decline to the point where I was struggling to keep up with my academics. Looking back, I was not mentally healthy enough to ask for help, even from my parents.
When classes began again on January 10th, my mental health had deteriorated to a critical point, and I was hospitalized on January 16th. Over the weeks that followed, I focused on arranging counselling from mental health professionals. This included a weekly call with my family doctor, calls with a psychologist, and weekly sessions with a therapist specializing in cognitive behavioural therapy.
After consulting a PASS Student Advisor on January 20th, we began navigating the process to find support and accommodation for my academics. We were directed to the Academic Considerations Team but were then re-directed to the Academic Accommodations team. This was a lengthy process, but we worked with Cristina Cardelus and I received my letters of accommodation on February 14th. I emailed and uploaded my letters of accommodation for each course that week. Prioritizing my medical appointments, therapy sessions, and remaining on a diligent routine of exercise, healthy eating, and quality sleep has allowed my health to improve but not to the point of keeping up with academics and deadlines. Realizing I was not going to be able to complete my courses, we tried to drop the courses on SOLUS but was unable to do so. I organized a meeting with Cristina Cardelus after returning to campus on March 11th. We drafted this appeal and asked for supporting documents from health care providers, which are included.
Again, I am appealing to drop POLS 110 and PHIL 111 past the drop deadline as a result of mental health-related circumstances. By dropping this course I will be able to focus my full attention on my remaining course. Thank you for your consideration.
