Petition Letter: Hello,
My name is Maggie Leung. I am currently a first year student in Concurrent Education (BAH/BEd). I am appealing to drop a course after the academic deadline. This course is MUSC 114 in the Winter 2022 term.
The extenuating circumstances which have directly affected my academic performance was physical illness, and psychological challenges caused by this illness. Throughout the months of January and February, I have been consistently feeling very unwell almost everyday. The main symptoms included nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and moderate to severe stomach pain. These symptoms also affected my mental health because I was starting to fall behind in coursework due to being unable to focus and work on material required for my courses. I made multiple visits to the emergency room throughout January and February as I was feeling increasingly sick, to the point where I was unable to handle it on some days. I have always taken school very seriously, and hold myself to a high standard so this sudden change heavily impacted and changed all aspects of my academics for me.
Between February 8, 2022 and February 11, 2022, I was hospitalized as outlined in my supporting documentation. The doctor stated in my documentation that I would be able to go back to normal activities on February 14, 2022. During the time I stayed at the hospital, I was unable to complete any work for my courses. I was unable to even take a look at any schoolwork during that entire time. This further impacted my mental health because I did not want to fall behind more, and realized that I would be missing many major deadlines in my courses.
After being discharged from the hospital, I applied for and was approved for Academic Consideration for ??Severe/Serious Academic Limitations? between February 8 and 13, 2022. I contacted all my course instructors in the affected courses as soon as I could. I received responses from all of them stating what Academic Consideration would be appropriate. I tried my best to catch up with all of the work I missed, but I was too overwhelmed as there were many deadlines coming up that I needed to work on as well. I was constantly feeling very anxious because of this which made it much more difficult to stay on time with deliverables and put out the best quality of work that I know I am capable of. I spoke about my struggles with anxiety with my family doctor, and was prescribed medication to help me with that.
At this point in time, I feel that I am finally being able to regain some of the focus that I had before I was ill. But, by this point in time I am already near the end of my Winter 2022 courses. I have also recently found out about two very devastating news regarding two of my close family members. One has been diagnosed with cancer, and one has unexpectedly passed away. These news have made it even more difficult to make schoolwork a priority. I am currently still working on getting back on track in all of my courses, and have contacted my instructors to work on a suitable timeline for due dates. I have found that I am realistically able to finish most of my courses with a semi-decent grade, although still lower than what I expected and wanted them to be.
The only course that I feel I cannot handle is MUSC 114. I have contacted the instructor about my circumstances, and received reasonable academic consideration. But, I am still finding this course the most difficult out of all my other courses. I originally chose this course as an interesting elective, but the stress that it is causing with completing all missing coursework due to my illness is too much for me. I have missed several Weekly Task Assignments, and two projects (worth a total 20% of final grade). I feel that it would be a wise decision to drop this course as I do not expect that I will finish with a good grade. I would rather spend more time and focus on my other courses, most being courses that are required for a major that I possibly want to declare for second year (PHIL 157, GNDS 120, ENGL 100), and three being courses that I need specifically for the Concurrent Education program in accordance with mandatory requirements and my future teaching subjects (PROF 110, ENGL 100, ARTF 125). I do not want this elective course to negatively affect my GPA if it is not at all a required course for me. I have decided that I will possibly retake it in the future if I feel that it is something I want to do.
I regret not dropping this course before the academic deadline passed, but at that time I still wanted to push through and try my best to successfully finish the course. Now I realize that it is not realistic for me.
Thank you,
Maggie Leung
