Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jill Atkinson,
My name is Daniel Murrans, I am a first year art science student. I am writing today to appeal to drop my CHEM 112 (Fall 2021, Winter 2022), BIOL 103 (Winter 2022), MATH 121 (Fall 2021, Winter 2022), and PHYS 117 (Fall 2021, Winter 2022) courses.
At the start of December, during the beginning of the omicron lockdown I spiraled into a debilitating depression. I found myself unable to do anything from December to the beginning of March. Even just thinking about school would result in a panic attack, which was just one issue on top of many others (disordered eating, extreme sleep cycles, and a homophobic environment on my residence floor). All of this resulted in me breaking down and returning to my home in Halifax to be supported by family. Attached is a ?Verification of Personal Health Condition?? form I completed with my therapist which supported my approved request for Academic Considerations. After corresponding with my professors, they suggested that dropping these courses is my best option.
Why didn??t you drop the course earlier?
The nature of my condition was completely debilitating. I could not even approach the idea of dropping the courses without spiraling further. I was holding out hope that my condition would improve and considerations would be all I needed to succeed, but that did not happen.
Why can??t you finish these courses?
I am in too bad of a state to finish out the term. I started medication last week and beyond all of my mental health issues the side effects have made work unapproachable.
Have your circumstances been resolved or are they now being managed in such a way that you are able to make a successful return to your studies?
With the help of my therapist and family I am working on many solutions so I can succeed academically in September. As mentioned above, I have started medication. I also am meeting with my therapist weekly, leading a strict routine, and getting all aspects of my health back in line. I am also working with my therapist to build long term solutions to my issues. One thing we are pursuing is working through QSAS to grant me accommodations for next year.
Through all of this, I am still excited to work towards completing my undergraduate degree. With the support of the school, my therapist, my family and roommates, I have grown confident that I can once again succeed academically.
I ask you today to please allow me to withdraw from these four courses so I can start fresh in September.
Thank you,
Daniel Murrans
