Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to make an appeal to drop the course STAT 263. I have struggled throughout this semester with schedule balancing because of many near overlapping due dates and evaluation dates.
I have accommodations surrounding my anxiety disorder, particularly with test anxiety. However, the accommodations cannot help when evaluations fall within close proximity to each other. For me personally, when this occurs, I tend to focus more energy on the evaluation I am most afraid of doing poorly on - although I do not take any course lightly. STAT 263 was not often the course I was most worried about, since my major is Life Science. I paid the price for these prioritizations greatly during the STATS midterm evaluation that took place a few days after the reading week period. Sadly, this evaluation was held the day before my midterm evaluation in ANAT 216. In the first semester ANAT 215 was a course I struggled to score high on evaluations and hoped to improve on this in the winter semester. I have been improving in ANAT 216 but unfortunately at the cost of my grade in STAT 263. I scored a failing grade on the STAT 263 midterm (which is worth between 10% and 30%.) The final exam will then be worth either 60% or 80% (in order to maximize final grade) as stated on the grading page of onQ.
I wish to drop this course so I may have a chance to take a different statistics course (BIOL 243) which should be a better fit for me since it is not as test heavy. At the time of choosing my statistics course I was unaware of BIOL 243 and was encouraged to take STAT 263 by many of my peers who had taken it in the fall term. I did not drop STAT 263 sooner because I hoped to salvage my grade after the failing midterm mark. However, as we get closer to finals, I realize it is not good for my overall mental health to have an exam potentially worth 80% hanging over my head. I feel that with my test anxiety and general anxiety that I will have an incredibly stressful study time leading up to the exam and I may panic when the time finally does arrive.
I ask that STAT 263 not remain on my transcript as it will adversely impact my ability to remain in the Life Science program, by lowering my overall GPA. Also, BIOL 243 says STAT 263 is an exclusion, so I wonder if I will not be allowed to take BIOL 243 if STAT 263 is still on my transcript. If this course were to be taken off my transcript entirely, at your discretion, it would ease that transition without any conflict.
I appreciate your consideration and understanding and hope you will support my request to drop STAT 263.
