Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Hello, my name is Caitlin Taylor and I am hoping to appeal SPAN 111. I had started off the first section of this course online due to COVID and had thought I was doing better than I previously thought. There were not that many evaluations of my skills at the beginning of the course and that led me to believe I was doing better than I was. I thought that once things moved to in-person classes I would have time to raise my marks. This was not the case. I passed the deadline to drop the course and then continued to further struggle without the realization that I would do poorly beforehand due to online learning. After the deadline passed I got sick which was due to my anxiety as well as sinusitis and bronchitis. My anxiety and sickness lasted for almost two weeks, which perpetuated my struggle in class. I missed an oral presentation deadline due to my sickness and although I have accommodations I was given a completely different assignment to also do instead. I also missed out on sending in some Mindtap assignments because of the sickness as well. I have missed a few classes and have further missed out on the learning experience I could have had without being sick and having anxiety issues. I am applying for the appeal on April 4th, when I have decided to attempt to drop the course. I had not realized until now that an appeal was necessary and I thought that I would be able to drop the course. After much research, I have found that this is the best decision I could possibly make at this time to hope for no effect on my GPA. I have done well in all of my other classes and this course seems to be the exception. I am willing to take a summer course in order to gain the lost credits and hope I can do so. Although I have made the mistake of missing the deadline, I hope you can consider this appeal.
