Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am appealing to drop PSYC 221 (Winter, 2022).
The middle of March 2022 was the onset of my extenuating circumstances. I received the news that my paternal grandfather has cancer that has spread. This news triggered my emotions. My father passed away in February 2020 from terminal cancer as well as my uncle later that year. In addition, due to the return of in-person classes, I was required to abruptly sell my deceased father's house, which triggered feelings of grief, severe stress, and anxiety. These extenuating circumstances impacted my academic performance in PSYC 221. Prior to my extenuating circumstances, I had high grades in PSYC 221 and which have now fallen behind. This course was the only course that had a later test date (March 21) compared to my other courses where my midterms had already been written. Due to the timing and the test date, my academic performance suffered in this course, and I feel it is not an accurate representation of my academic abilities.
I feel the best decision for my mental health is to drop this course, which I feel would lessen my stress and anxiety. In addition, unlike my other courses, this course is not required since I am enrolled in the required number of courses to satisfy the degree requirement for option courses. I plan to take an extra course in the summer.
To help with my personal situation, I have contacted my grief counsellor. I plan on contacting Student Wellness Services for future support.
Thank you for your consideration,
Alecia Bart
