Petition Letter: To whomever this may concern,
I am writing to appeal for a late drop regarding one of my winter term (winter 2022) courses, CISC 454.
Since the start of the winter term, I have been struggling with my mental health which has greatly impacted my academic and non-academic life. I've been constantly feeling nervous/anxious and have been frequently worrying about different responsibilities. I've also been struggling with depression. My sleep quality has been worsening as well as my eating habits. It was also extremely difficult to concentrate on my academic work and find motivation. As seen on my supporting documentation, I struggled with communicating these difficulties as I was scared of how the Professor would view my situation.
To make situations worse, I was affected by a physical illness starting March 25th. I contacted SWS regarding my symptoms and was told to rest at home. The doctor made the likely diagnosis of mononucleosis. Since then, I've been feeling extremely fatigued (in addition to my mental health) and was unable to complete most, if not all academic responsibilities. At this time, I reached out to my professors regarding my physical health condition as I felt comfortable having been given a diagnosis. Although the academic consideration allowed me to rest briefly, it resulted in many deadlines being grouped closely together. Due to all these deadlines, and my uncertainty regarding whether I could receive further accommodations from professors, my mental health took a turn for the worse and I eventually reached out to a counselor at SWS after reaching a breaking point.
While discussing my experience from the past term, the counselor suggested filling out a questionnaire to assess my current mental state. The questionnaire indicated that I have been struggling with moderately severe depression and moderate anxiety. The counselor then offered to connect me with a physician through Queen's which I accepted.
To summarize, I struggled with both my mental and physical health this past term which greatly impacted my academic work, particularly in CISC 454. After these events, I have taken steps to improve my situation and work on my health, so that such situations do not repeat themselves. Thank you for taking the time to read this appeal letter. Please refer to the documentation that I have provided for your consideration.
Best,
Dong Woo (Tony) Sul
