Petition Letter
Petition Letter: My name is Matthew Thomas Shannon and I am writing this letter to ask for approval to drop my CISC 151 course that I took in the Winter semester 2022. I had to drop this course as I was battling depression and anxiety (a recurrence from Grade 11), and and I was unable to get my medication dosage adjusted properly to control my symptoms. As a result I was experiencing panic attacks and general anxiety/disorganized thinking which made me uncapable to complete the work required in this course, and made my other courses extremely difficult. This also lead to an ability to sleep which further exacerbated my symptoms.
I have had some ongoing health struggles that have been existent since high school, but were acutely triggered by the death of my grandfather in October 2021, who was one of my closest friends and relatives. I have struggled to finish the semester, and am still not back to 100% but continue to try and get healthy every day.
The symptoms I was facing took away my ability to complete any work on CISC-151 for about 6-7 weeks, and although I tried to catch up when I had some improvement in my symptoms it was impossible to make up the time lost while trying to catch up in my other courses and ensure success in those. I didn't drop the course in time because I still had some bad sleeping problems and subsequent anxiety going into the winter term exams, and thinking about writing this appeal caused serious anxiety symptoms leaving me unable to complete it. I will follow up with a note from my psychologist as soon as they forward it to my attention. Hopefully I can successfully drop this course and have it removed from my permanent school transcript/record or marked as dropped for medical reasons.
My goal is to get healthy over the summer months and get back on track for the fall semester.
Sincerely,
Matthew Shannon
