Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to appeal for an extension of the Incomplete grade I received for PSYC 440 in the Fall 2021 semester.

Initially, I was unable to complete the final assignment for this course due to an illness that spanned a few weeks ?? this had also influenced my other courses in the fall term. This winter term I had been struggling with balancing school and work. Personal circumstances required me to work part-time this past year, and due to issues with understaffing, it was very difficult to request time off. This issue had only gotten worse throughout the last semester, as I was continually scheduled more and more hours (started from 10 hours per week and currently over 20).

Additionally, in the last couple of months, a parent had begun struggling with mental illness again. This was challenging on my part as I felt the need to be responsible and visit home more often. Taking on additional emotional burden also affected my own mental state. This added on to the strain I had in trying to balance my time, and I failed to prioritize the completion of my final assignment.

I ended up developing feelings of depression in the month of April ?? I was experiencing mood dysregulation symptoms and felt anhedonic. During this time, I contacted a counsellor to discuss these issues, and plan to continue with either in person sessions or with Empower Me. I will be staying at my current job until the end of May, and expect any related issues to be resolved by then. Due to continuing circumstances at work and at home, I do not expect to have enough time to complete during May. I plan to have the assignment finished by the end of June.
