Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop Econ 490 in Fall 2021. At the start of the fall term there was a death in my family. This impacted my performance throughout the term but specifically in ECON 490. At this point I started to become depressed and suicidal. Previously ive had similar issues and the death sparked that up again. I met with a health care professional to determine my degree of depression/suicidal thinking. They determined that I had moderate to serve depression and suicidal thoughts. I then met with a counsellor to begin discussing things etc. and potientally ways to decrease my overall depression and suicidal thoughts. Throughout the term I found it very difficult to do work. Specifically i always had thoughts on my mind about suicide etc. And struggled to focus on work. My counsellor then suggested academic consideration for around 2 months (Oct-Dec) to relieve stress and allow me extra time to finish work. Although I was granted consideration I was sti struggling extremely with work and on my own time. Econ 490 is setup primarily weighted to the final seminar paper (5000 words). As well there is a
presentation, and discussions. I was unable to complete the seminar paper in the course. Writing in general is very difficult for me (see detailed accomdations), but became extremely difficult during fall term due to my circumstances. I had trouble concentrating and lost confidence in myself. Unfortunately my mental state was so terrible that I considered killing myself a few times and therefore was not motivated to do the paper. I never completed the paper and therefore failed the course. In addition, in order to complete my econ degree I need a seminar course (5000 word paper), which I completed this term (winter) in another course code, econ 483 (acting as my seminar completed). Due to the course codes not matching I was unable to have them act as a single course (even though they act as a substitutes on solus and constitute 5000word papers).
