Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Academics,

This letter is regarding my request to appeal the following courses for credit standing: DEVS220, FREN343, and LLCU325.

During the fall semester of 2021, I came across an extenuating circumstance beyond my control that has unfortunately caused me to fall behind on my academic studies. Starting in late September, I was faced with ongoing emotional abuse and trauma coming from a specific individual that I am no longer in contact with. In mid October, a major incident occurred which has taken a huge toll on my mental health and wellbeing. I had several concerns for my personal safety and brought myself to come in contact with the police regarding the situation. I have also reached out to Student Wellness Services at Queens to discuss this personal matter with a counselor. I was continuously dealing with this incident and its consequences throughout the rest of the semester, including during exam season.

Due to the complication of the situation and the bad timing that this event occurred, I had a lot of difficulty focusing on my academics and finishing final assignments. Certain courses (the ones listed above) were more impacted than others as the majority of the larger assignments and exams took place during the stressful time of the incident.

This is the first time I was encountered with such extreme circumstances and as someone who has always taken academics very seriously, it is unfortunate that I have to apply for credit standing. For the future, I will continue to take measures that will enhance my safety and ensure a stronger academic outcome. I will not allow any contact with the abusive person, and I will continue to prioritize my mental health in all ways possible. Student Wellness Services has been a great help to me during this process, so I will continue to schedule regular appointments for extra support and to keep in touch with my counselor.

Thank you for taking the time to read and consider my letter of appeal.

Best,
Olivia
