My name is Talia Lewis and I am a second year student at Queen's. In September of 2021, my grandfather had to undergo a bone marrow transplant for which he was hospitalized. At the beginning of December, he was discharged from the hospital. The original plan my family had was that after the hospitalization was over, my grandmother would be his caregiver and drive him to his multiple appointments per week, cook for him, clean for him and ensure that he was taking all the proper medications. However, it quickly became clear that because of her age and own medical conditions, that she was not up to taking care of him right now. So I immediately went back to Toronto from Kingston to take care of them both indefinitely. All of my exams during the fall semester were moved to be online, so this did not present any problems at the time. Since the first two months of the winter semester were virtual, I was able to complete all my coursework and have access to all course material on OnQ. I hoped to return to Kingston once classes were switched back to in-person, but my grandfather's medical condition only worsened. As their only caregiver now, I have been unable to return to Kingston. Three of my courses were made to be accessible online, and I have now completed them. However, my inability to attend lectures and tutorials in person has been detrimental two my two full year courses: MATH 110 and POLS 250. Before this exam period, I reached out to an academic advisor who suggested a couple options, and applying for a late drop if those options did not pan out. After having been in contact with my professors via email, I now think that a late drop would be the best option for both me and my professors. Despite my efforts to keep up with all my courses remotely, it was impossible to do with these two. As I know that not being in the same city as the school I attend is unsustainable, I have applied to the University of Toronto, and am hoping to start there in September 2022, so that I may care for my grandparents, while also being able to go to class in person.
