Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jill Atkinson

My name is Tianshu Yin; I am a new third-year BSCH student who majored in Geography, Arts minor in Environmental Studies, and a certificate in Geographic Information Science and Urban Planning studies. I am writing this appeal letter for dropping a course (GPHY 345) after the deadline. The reason for this is extenuating psychological circumstances which everlasting the whole semester. In November 2021, I was diagnosed with relative severe Narcissistic personality disorder, Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, Histrionic Personality Disorder and medium manic depression in Tianjin Hospital, China. However, I have not received psychological treatment planned to travel back to Canada in late December 2021. The doctor there suggests I seek support at Queen's. Then I have been back to Kingston, and the Omicron outbreak makes everything online again. I contacted the QSAS for accommodation in early January, and Deb Bruce made an appointment for a psychological doctor in early March. But the doctor did show no that time, so I could not get phycological support for a long time. I suffer from this extenuating problem which influences my daily life and learning workload. It is hard for me to concentrate and couple with multiple relationships. I am the academic coordinator at the geography department student council, the undergraduate member of the appointments committee and had been placed on Dean's list in the past academic year with a 3.7 average grade. The quality of my academic is dropping due to personality disorder and manic depression. It has been challenging to feel supported and involved in the past semester. So, I only finished three courses this semester (GPHY 207 230 337) hardly by late submission and extension. For the other two courses this semester, GPHY 240 instructor Christen gave me an (IN) incomplete grade, which extended the course to the end of August, and GPHY 345 instructor Dongmei could not give me an IN grade because she had a research program in the summer and unable handle teaching in summer. So, she gave me an F grade because I did not submit most of the coursework (three labs) in the semester. Hence, I would like to appeal to drop this course and retake it in future. This course is a core course for my GIS certificate. I am currently connecting the student wellness center for psychological doctor dialogizing and treatment and getting supporting documents in English. I apologize I could only provide some pictures for part of the Chinese Diagnose paper to help this appeal at the time, and you may contact Dongmei, who is a Chinses instructor know my personal life and psychological problem and Deb to confirm my extenuating circumstance. As the academic coordinator at DSC and undergraduate member of the appointments committee, I have an excellent connection with many Geography faculty members. They can prove my extenuating circumstance.

I am currently the Deputy Academic Commissioner (supports and recourse) in charge of the Academic Appeal Resources Center (AARC), ASUS Review, ASUS Peer tutoring, and two Teaching Awards in the Faculty of Arts and Science. I am responsible for all academic-related support and recourses to all ArtSci undergraduates at Queens. However, I need your help and support for my personal extenuating psychological sufferings. I fully understand the appeal and academic regulations, and I write the letter with great honesty and confidence. It would be graceful if my appeal could be granted, making me successful in my academic career.
