Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,
My name is Emma Smith and I am a concurrent education student majoring in Math and French. I am appealing for a credit standing (CR) in my second year Math 211 course due to extenuating circumstances that were beyond my control. These circumstances negatively affected my performance in the course.
At the beginning of second year, my best friend and roommate was raped by another Queen??s student, and throughout the year I had to deal with the aftermath of her trauma. I was the one she called right after it happened and the one who found her in the morning. She was in such a negative headspace which carried over through the rest of the year. She would over-drink, over-sleep, under-sleep, under-eat and cause me tremendous amounts of stress when it came to looking out for her. She would relive the events out loud and put the weight of them on my shoulders, making me extremely mentally exhausted and drained. Several times throughout the year I had to request doctor??s notes in order to receive an academic extension due to the effects her negative and detrimental coping methods had on me.
Two times throughout the year she tried to take her own life: once when my roommates were in the house, and once when I was alone with her. Both times I was the one to call poison control and 911, and the second time I had to make sure she stayed alive while waiting for the ambulance. Both events have severely scarred me and greatly impacted my ability to work. I became severely depressed and anxious which had a visible effect on my school work. My marks from the first semester in Math 211 noticeably dropped to low 50??s and fails during the second semester. I was unable to cope with the events she put me through, and it caused me to suffer not only mentally but also academically.
There is currently an ongoing investigation going on into her case, one which Queen??s is aware of. She listed me as a witness or person who could provide extra information regarding her case, forcing me to relive the year??s events again.
I am requesting this appeal due to the F I received in the course: a grade I know would have been substantially higher if not for the events of this year. My grades in university have always been higher than a 70, and my math grades in particular have always been high. I have always been a good student who studies hard for her courses and puts in the work to receive the high grades. This year however I was so mentally exhausted and drained that I was unable to put in the work required to obtain the grade I knew I could receive. And even when I put in the work, it was not up to standard because I had fallen so far behind in the course and was unable to catch up. Additionally, the grade in this class has also greatly decreased my GPA, and I must maintain a 2.7 average in order to stay in the concurrent education program.
