Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,

I am appealing to drop PHIL 153 (winter 2022 term).

At the beginning of March 2022, I began experiencing acute anxiety which led to a depression. I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and it is something I have dealt with my entire life. While I generally consider myself high functioning, this recent onset was severe and made it difficult for me to sleep, eat, and perform other daily tasks. On many days, the mental illness I was experiencing rendered me physically ill. I recognized the severity of my symptoms and reached out for help. Over the past three months, I have spoken to four counsellors, one psychologist, and have been given a referral for a psychiatrist. I have had several appointments with my family doctor and have begun to take anti-depressants daily. This medication has come with its own side effects ?? mainly mood swings, nausea, and increased difficulty sleeping.

My anxiety and its side effects made concentration very difficult. I was unable to focus my attention on my schoolwork. It took all the energy I had simply to get up and get through the day. As evidenced by my prior academic performance, I care deeply about my academics and throughout this time took action to help preserve my grades. I registered with QSAS and created an accommodation plan. I also worked with a counsellor and intake coordinator at QSAS, who helped me to ask for incompletes in the classes that I was unable to finish. This has been very helpful. Apart from PHIL 153, I have been able to complete nearly all my classes and plan on finishing the last remaining one (SOCY 122) by the end of the summer.

Considering the severity of the mental illness I was experiencing, I feel accomplished having completed the work that I have. I have both an essay and exam to complete in PHIL 153 which I know will require a significant amount of time and energy. While I am generally doing better than I was in March and April, I am still experiencing lasting anxiety and depression which affects my day-to-day life. I feel that the best thing to do for my health would be to drop the course and have it behind me. I want to focus all my energy on doing better - continuing to adjust to my medication, working with my psychologist, and creating a plan for the future. Dropping PHIL 153 would allow me to do this without an added stress hanging over my head.

Thank-you for your consideration,

Evelyn Blaney (Student 20271250)
