Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am a varsity athlete on the Men¿¿s Volleyball Team. On January 23rd, during a volleyball practise, I was hit in the face by very hard spiked volleyball. I went back to my room after practise and began vomiting. My brother drove me to the hospital that night and had a CAT scan for potential bleeding the returned negative. I was diagnosed with a mild concussion and had constant headaches, fogginess, eye aches and I was restricted to a dark room with no electronics for a week and a half. I was forced to miss that week of classes as well as two midterms.
I met with Dr. O¿¿Connor at the Athletic Therapy Centre in the ARC. I was told to limit my electronic usage and to attend class, but not take notes. I had extreme difficulty simply watching and paying attention to lectures. Anytime I would use my laptop, my head would hurt and I would be forced to stop.
I have improved since then, but I am still effected by post concussion symptoms. I am unable to be on electronics for long periods of time without headaches or eye aches. I still find writing notes and studying very difficult. I recently wrote a paper for KNPE 167 in four weeks, which normally would take less than one week. I have been unable to do all of my course work due to my inability to stay focused, remember important information, use electronics, work for long periods of time and attend classes regularly. These symptoms have improved, but are still prevalent during any activity.
This accommodation will help me immensely because I am already behind in other courses, trying to catch up. I have already missed five midterms; an annotative bibliography and I will be missing two final exams. I am planning to write my two remaining final exams this month and I have worked with my professor to receive incomplete grades for my two other courses that I will be completing in the summer. However, studying for my exams is still extremely difficult. I am forced to take breaks regularly and I have extreme trouble concentrating and staying focused. By receiving an aegrotat grade for this course, I will be able to finish all of my course work for this semester without aggravating and worsening my symptoms.
Thank you very much. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Dylan Hunt
