Petition Letter: My name is Solomon, and I am a first-year student at Queens University. Throughout the first year of my studies, I have had difficulties with concentration and completion of my course work. These difficulties started in November 2021 and continued through until April 2022. I had frequent panic attacks and bad anxiety. There were many times that I was unable to attend classes as I have had difficulties sleeping at night. Unfortunately, I was in a place where I was incapable of pushing through my difficulties to complete the necessary work. I was able to begin some of my assignments and do some of the online quizzes but could not concentrate and was unable to complete work to the best of my ability. At other times throughout the year I was not able to do any work. Further to my disadvantage, I was extremely ill with Covid at the beginning of March and fell even further behind on my work.
I am requesting a late appeal for my fall courses because I was in the midst of figuring out how to proceed going forward at Queens with Ms. Everson and Ms. Motut. We were determining whether I would be able to complete the missed assignments and save my courses or withdraw from them completely and retake the courses next school year. I would have initiated the appeal process earlier if I would have known which route I was going to take and the deadline.
I have been in contact with my physician, Dr. Satok, throughout this school year and he is providing the necessary documentation. I have followed all medical treatments and appointments, and, thankfully, the frequency of these issues have decreased significantly. I am motivated to be successful at Queens in the coming school year and would appreciate the opportunity to start over with a clean slate.
Thank you,
Solomon Serruya
