Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I am appealing to have my requirement to withdraw from studies waived.
During my time at Queen??s University, I have found many hardships when it comes to attending classes and completing the work that is required for a full course load. My first year was undoubtedly a failure that resulted in a requirement to withdraw for one year in the academic year of 2018-2019. I went through with taking the time off for I felt as though time away would help me begin to revaluate my priorities and goals. After my required time away and reinvigorated drive to success, I returned to classes and found myself suffering from the same hardships that I had faced in my first year.
I then decided to reach out to the Student Wellness Center in the academic year of 2019-2020 and was able to get in contact with the Mental Health Counselor Meghan Leuprecht who was able to help me find out that I have been slowly but steadily developing a fear and anxiety of being in a classroom. I found myself having what can only be described as panic attacks with the thought of returning to the classroom. This combined with the nature of spending countless hours alone with thoughts of failure and adversity due to the COVID-19 pandemic left my mental health in a very poor state.
At this point, I was able to meet with one of the doctors being Dr. Lee who prescribed anti-anxiety and depression medication to me to attempt to assist me with day-to-day life. Unfortunately, this medication was unable to help me with the panic attacks that would occur when thinking of returning to the classroom. I was hoping that the medication would eventually make it so that I felt comfortable returning to the classroom and taking on a full course load which did not end up coming true.
I have been and plan on continuing to be in contact with Student Wellness Services regarding my mental health throughout these difficult times and I plan to stay connected moving forward. The SWS has proved time and time again to be one of the most important connections that I had the incredible fortune to make during my extended time attending Queen??s University.
After having discussed a plan with an academic advisor in March of 2022 and create a plan that includes me reducing my course load, converting to an online education as well as being in close contact with support systems that include the Student Wellness services as well as friends and family. I believe with these strategies in place, I will be able to achieve the much desired goal of success in my education at Queen??s University.
Thank you for considering my academic appeal.
Sincerely,
Robert Jinn

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Appeal Plan of Action

Through the time during COVID, I have found that I struggle in classrooms and am more suited to online courses. In March of 2022, I was able to reach out to the Personal Counselor Meghan Leuprecht and she was able to help me realize that I am more suited to online courses for they are able to assist my mental health and anxiety by providing me with more control over my own scheduling when it comes to the work I am to complete as well as creating a safe space that I am in control of. I have spoken to an advisor in June of 2022, and they were able to assist me in working on a plan to focus on my ability to learn through online alternatives if I am permitted to enroll again for September.
In the past, I have found myself overestimating the number of courses that I would be able to successfully take. Pressures from my family as well as a longing for success in my education led to the enrollment and eventual dropping of courses that I was not adequately mentally prepared for. By dropping these courses and COVID bringing things to be online made me realize that the online alternative was much more suitable for myself. I believe that being a part time student from enrollment on top of being online will greatly contribute to my success at Queen??s university.
The steps that I will be taking to achieve success will first be the previously mentioned change to online classes. With this goal achieved, I will be able to be closer to the support systems that include my friends and family that will assist in the continued betterment of my mental health. Alongside my friends and family, I will be continuing to reach out to my Personal counselor, begin to reach out to the Professors of my courses and also discuss goals with a learning strategist in the Student Academic Success Services. I believe that these steps will make it so that I will be able to succeed in my studies at Queen??s University.
