Petition Letter: DEAR Associate Deans (Academic),
I am Lu Zhang, I am grateful to the school for giving me the opportunity to appeal. This letter of appeal is in the hope that the Associate Dean will consider imposing academic probation in lieu of the one-year withdrawal. The following are the reasons for my appeal, these reasons for this were all serious to my academic performance in my first year, but they have all been resolved now and will not be a problem in the future.
I made a mistake in my course selection and did not have a clear perception of my abilities in certain areas of study in my first year at university, which affected my study attitude and caused negative emotions in my studies.
After choosing PSYC100, the class was more difficult than I expected. But instead of dropping PSYC100, I dropped JAPN100 to make time for Psychology. But the process of studying Psychology did not get any easier with the reduction in my other classes and the increase in time. This pressure on my grades was already causing me a lot of stress when I first started university, and I felt less confident, frustrated and doubted myself. Dropping JAPN100 has been a source of regret for me and has kept me in the mood that I have made a very bad choice. This has affected my attitude towards studying psychology and even other subjects and has led to a negative and resistant reaction towards studying psychology and even all subjects.
After a year of study experience, I have a plan for my course selection. I will objectively and correctly assess my abilities and then choose the right course for me or a course that is challenging but not too challenging for my abilities. I will also be able to identify courses that are not suitable for me based on experience and think calmly about whether to drop them or seek more academic help. I do not let my emotions and studies be easily influenced anymore and I know how to regulate myself positively.
Moreover, the year has been full of events that have forced me to sacrifice a lot of time to study
Because of the covid-19, all my family members are in China and are under constant siege by the covid-19 virus. Every day I read news reports about the epidemic in China and was worried about them. I was also anxious about my safety when I was alone in Canada. I had close contact with a symptom-positive patient once, and the absence of my family brought a feeling of helplessness and fear, and I was afraid to tell my family. I was anxious for a long time and imagined some bad outcomes. Finally, the recurring outbreaks in Kingston led to repeated changes in the school's teaching methods, both online and offline. Although I studied online for a long time in high school, there is a big difference between high school and university. It also took a long time to adapt and adjust because of my own lack of adaptability.
All the above are reasons that have diverted a lot of time and attention from my studies to worry about. It's all a matter of mindset and mental capacity and I now have the ability to calmly and quickly solve any new problems that may exist and not be affected by the previous ones. I'm sure I've adjusted and adapted fully in that time. I have realized that my emotions have seriously affected my studies and that I have been very costly, and I am very disappointed and angry with my GPA. I promise not to let any of the above reasons and any new reasons and issues that may arise affecting my mental and academic state and emotions again. I am also confident that I now could demonstrate my highest level of efficiency and quality of learning. I promise to do my best to improve my GPA, and I have the capacity to improve my GPA. I am acutely aware of my mistakes and have paid the price, and sincerely hope that I will be given the opportunity to make amends in a timely manner.
This is the full content of my letter of appeal. I am sorry to have disturbed your valuable time, I truly sincerely wish that you could be patient in reading my content and consider my appeal, I respect any decision.
Sincerely yours,
Lu

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Regarding my academic plan, first of all, the goal of this plan is to help and monitor the improvement of my cumulative GPA to at least a 1.6 by the end of the winter term of May 2023 (if my appeal is successful).
When I start a new semester, I will retake some of the courses that I know I can get better grades in and focus on the FILM program, trying not to take less than five classes per semester and making minor adjustments if 5 courses put pressure on my schedule. During the summer break, I will also enroll in some courses during the summer term, so that I can study as many classes as possible within my ability and achieve an above-average academic performance, thus increasing my cumulative GPA. This is to improve the efficiency and quality of my studies. When I have difficulties in my studies or need any academic help, be brave enough to ask for help from people or departments that can provide effective solutions. Don't let problems or difficulties go unresolved and lead to a vicious ferment. In my first year, my main malignant influences were my mental and emotional problems and my ability to adapt, although I have been able to mediate and resolve these problems and can prevent them from affecting me later. However, I still check my emotions and my attitude to learning periodically. If there are any negative trends I will stop the trends in time. To uncover the causes of bad developments and to address and comprehensively prevent them. But trust me, I will not be easily influenced now or in the future because I have the experience and the ability to defuse and consume bad feelings and my mental capacity has become stronger. Of course, all the above plans will not be implemented for just one year but will be applied throughout my undergraduate studies. I will always aim for the highest level of academic achievement I can achieve and hope that I am given the opportunity to succeed in my appeal.
