Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Myella Boudreau I am a student at Queen's University and just completed
th
my first year of studies. I am appealing the recent decision made on May 24 , 2022, that I must
withdraw for the Faculty of Arts and Science for one year. I understand the reasoning for this decision and respect your dedication to students' education at Queen's University. I am someone who takes pride in hard work and dedication, therefore I proudly accepted Queens University for my undergraduate education. Throughout my first semester I experienced multiple extenuating circumstances that drastically impacted my mental health, well-being, and academic discipline.
My grandmother was diagnosed with brain cancer in April 2021 and passed away on August 29th, 2021, exactly 5 days before I moved to Kingston to begin my studies. Moving away for university was a drastic life adjustment for me as I live 5 hours away and thus had to deal with my grief without my family and take responsibility of myself. I struggled to cope with my grief and anxiousness, and I lost motivation in my studies and everyday routines. Only a month after her passing my grandfather was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Because of the circumstances of his health, I was terribly distraught and home sick in December of 2021, and I attempted to get out of exams so that I might go home and spend whatever remaining time with him. My grandfather died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism on December 19th, 2021. My grandfather's passing had a profound effect on me as I had a deep bond with him. I struggled to maintain a healthy lifestyle for months after his death as I didn't know how to deal with my anxiety and intrusive thoughts, and I let my mental health disrupt every aspect of my life, notably my academics.
When my psychological state was at an all-time low in March of 2021, I decided to seek help from a psychotherapist, and this is when I met Lisa Koole to discuss about the grief, anxiety, and depression I'd been suffering since August. I've made significant progress in improving my mental health during the last few months. If a circumstance such as this occurs again in the future, I've developed numerous strategies to allow me stay in control of my mental health and avoid letting it impact the important areas of my life. For these reasons, I am requesting the opportunity to remain enrolled at Queen's University on academic probation for my second year. I've made significant lifestyle adjustments and learned the value of education and hard work. I understand and appreciate the opportunity given to me to attend this university and pledge to myself and you that I will give it my all.
I sincerely thank you for taking the time to consider my appeal, I hope to hear from you soon, Myella Boudreau

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Academic Plan June 10th, 2022
A. Course of study
My original plan when beginning my undergraduate in Arts and Science was to apply to the Psychology program. Because of the unforeseen nature of my academics and lack of 24 units I have made the decision to stay undeclared for my second year of university. I believe this will allow me to take the time and use the resources around me to improve my academics. At the end of second year, I plan to improve my academics to allow me to apply to the Sociology program and minor in gender studies since these are two courses, I am extremely passionate about.
B. Full time vs Part Time
I have decided to not take on a full time or part time job while attending school to allow me to focus on my courses. I think it is beneficial for me to take a lighter course as it will allow me to do my best work in the courses at hand and not get overwhelmed by deadlines.
C. Strategies for success
During my first year I found that my mental health and surroundings drastically impacted my work ethic, I found myself not being able to work on multiple tasks a day or make a proper schedule for myself. Moving forward I have learnt multiple organizational strategies that helps me schedule my day to day and use time blocking. This allows me to see my priorities for the day and eliminate all distractions when doing these tasks. I tended to avoid academics when they seemed challenging or time consuming, moving forward I will reach out to academic advisors and connect with a peer mentor to help me break down challenging assignments and deadlines into a way that makes them seem less daunting. When struggling with my academics I was nervous to speak to academic advisors/counsellors about my issues as I felt embarrassed, over the past months I have learnt the importance of reaching out for help and how helpful it can be. In the future I will reach out whenever I feel like I need any additional help or motivation.
