Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,

My name is Hannah Duchesneau and I am going into my third year here at Queen's University. I am appealing to receive credit standing in my Econ 255 fall term course.

In September 2021, I was selected to participate with our Senior Women's National Indoor Volleyball team at the 2021 Women's Pan American Cup held in the Dominican Republic. This tournament was important for both the development and growth sectors of our Senior Women's Volleyball Programs in Canada. Furthermore, my participation in this tournament was crucial in competing for points which are essential in getting our Women's National Team closer to qualifying for the olympics; reiterating what I had stated in my Request of Absence for Significant Event Form. That application was accepted and granted late September.

I had a preconceived idea of the demands that participating in this tournament would have on my course load during the fall semester; however, running into very poor working WIFI signals during my stay throughout the tournament made it impossible to complete the work I planned to do while away. I was not expecting to have a problem like this, especially at a Senior National Team level tournament, but unfortunately, this was the case. This situation drastically affected my academic performance when I came home, as I was playing catch up in all my crouses for the entire semester. I was consistently two weeks behind in all my courses, and in turn, this affected the amount of time I could thoroughly focus on the material presented during the present weeks for each course. This dilemma intensified my academic load and worsened my ability to perform at my best in all courses, but specifically ECON 255, a very heavy and concentrated course that I found myself incapable of providing enough time to thoroughly learn the material. Additionally, because of this event, along with the restrictions from the pandemic, I was not able to attend my in-person classes until 2 weeks before exams.

As my ECON 255 course was strictly online in the first semester, I feel my attendance in in-person courses within the fall semester is important to consider as I am a student with ADHD, and run/perform greatly off a time-managed schedule and learn more efficiently when a professor is present. I am registered with QSAS and submit my accommodations to professors at the beginning of each semester, but having a drastically different learning style than most students comes with many challenges not only in a standard semester, but in an online semester as well. In first year, these online barriers were challenging, but I pushed myself in my work efforts through each challenge presented as best as I could, which can be seen in my first year grades. However, the 2 week set back due to the unpresented wifi signals from this tournament caused these online barriers to become more severe and disabling for all courses as my attendance for classes helps with separating my time for easier focus and better efficiency to complete and learn materials. My ADHD is something I do not want to excuse, as I feel being a student-athlete has taught me to work extremely hard both in and out of the classroom to maintain good grades. This is essential for me especially since academics is not something that comes easily to me. As a rule throughout my educational career, not only is my responsibility to time manage and find success through adversity exceptional, but my day-to-day work ethic is unmatched. Due to unforeseen extenuating circumstances, I found it incredibly overwhelming and nearly impossible to put in the required amount of work I would normally give to each course when there simply were not enough hours in the day to cover both the missed and present material after coming home from the tournament.

Finally, as I was notified about my GPA score and the solutions available for keeping my AFA scholarship that I worked both physically and mentally hard for, I was not aware that I had the opportunity to apply for a credit standing in my ECON 255 course within a 21 day period from completing the course after the fall semester. With that being said, this is my situation and this is the best option available in my scenario with the little amount of time I have and I am very thankful to have it.

Thank you very much for your time

Hannah Duchesneau
