Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean
My name is India Ravenhearst, and I am appealing to drop HIST 253 and HIST 283 from the winter term of the 2021-2022 school year.
For the first time in my life, at the point these courses were wrapping up at the end of the semester I was experiencing debilitating anxiety and depression due to ongoing traumatic events that were taking place. My capabilities to perform well in my academics and find the motivation within myself to write essays and do the work necessary to perform well had completely vanished. Not only did this enhance my anxiety, as I had always been able to do well in academics, but I lost a lot of personal self-respect as I felt as though I was incapable of meeting the expectations I always had for myself. Being able to get out of bed or eat a meal was an obstacle on its own, let alone being able to complete schoolwork. To put it honestly, I was undeniably mentally ill. In March, I reached out to Student Wellness to see if there was any way I could get extensions on my work, but I do not believe the councillor knew the extent of my mental instability at the point I finally decided to utilize the resources available at Queen??s. My main priority was trying to complete the courses I could, and work alongside my professors to get the necessary work done to get a passing grade in the courses. However, despite the 2-week extensions, I could not bring myself to do the work necessary to complete these courses, as by the time I was trying to push myself to work I had already missed weeks of necessary content to write the final essays. In an already shaky mental state, forcing myself to catch up on this much content was impossible. At this point I decided to set up another appointment with Student Wellness, where I spoke with a councillor and realized that appealing courses was an option and thus received Academic Appeal documentation from a health care professional. Since this point in time, I have sought out help from friends and family, who have been a tremendous factor in my mental recovery by giving unlimited support. I am also in the process of finding a therapist who fits my needs.
If the appeal is granted, my plan would be to retake these courses. In reality I took both of these courses because of a genuine interest, and I would want the opportunity to take them again and perform to my true potential. This entire situation that I had experienced from the March to May period was distressing to say the least, and the last thing that I want is for it to affect my future aspirations any more than it has.
Thank you for your consideration at this time,
Sincerely,
India Miyoko Rani Ravenhearst.
