Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (studies),

I am writing to request an appeal to drop SOCY 301, SOCY 309, and HIST 206 (winter, 2015) past the normal drop date. I am requesting the marks for these 3 courses not count towards my GPA. The reason for my request is that extenuating circumstances beyond my control have greatly challenged me both psychologically and physically.

In mid-January 2015, I experienced a mental health crisis. At that time I was taking 5 courses for the winter 2015 terms and dropped down to 3 after consultation with my doctor in Hamilton. I was further affected by extenuating circumstances of the debilitation of my mental health state throughout February and began taking prescription medication for mental illness around this time as well as seeing a trained counsellor in Kingston.

I consulted with Medical doctors both at Queen¿¿s and in Hamilton due to the significant mental health issues. I additionally attended weekly counselling sessions in Kingston with a trained psychotherapist. I did the best I could but suffered a relapse and continued to be affected throughout March to the point where I had to regularly travel home to Hamilton to deal with my anxiety and depression issues and had to miss class. My medication was not effective enough to allow me to focus on school and my abilities to complete assignments effectively were compromised. At the end of March, I consulted my doctor in Hamilton and was advised to remain at home and not complete the remaining assignments in my three courses. I have attached letters dated March 31st and April 9th from my doctor outlining my doctor¿¿s beliefs, that I will be unable to complete my courses due to medical reasons. Feel free to contact my doctor if you require further information.

Prior to my struggles this semester I had a B average and had been a member of the Queen¿¿s Varsity Rowing Team, where I had won multiple medals. I did not do any rowing training this semester, which may have contributed to my struggles. I am a committed student and I know that with proper support I will be able to get healthy and be able to finish my degree. I plan on living with different friends off campus next school year who are aware of my issues and have expressed a willingness to help me. I also plan on continuing with psychotherapy. I plan on finishing my degree but with a slightly reduced course load (4 classes each semester). I also plan on taking different medication and continuing to row as I find the rowing routine helps me to discipline myself and focus on school. I plan on retaking my courses.

If you require any further information or documentation please let me know.

Thank you for your consideration,

Anise Truman
