Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
My name is Fiona Clancey (Queens ID 20206688) and I am a third year Media and Performance Production student. Due to extenuating circumstances I am unable to complete the necessary coursework for MUTH 310 and therefore I am writing this appeal to drop the course without academic penalty.
In October I sustained an injury to my shoulder and currently have academic accommodations in place for that injury until Nov 30th. This is an injury that I had hoped would heal in time to be able to start dancing and performing again, both of which are required for the final assessment in MUTH 310. I am currently waiting for an ultrasound and MRI to determine if surgery will be required and enclosed you will see documentation from my PhysioTherapist indicating that I will not be able to perform in this class. I have bilateral shoulder instability that can lead to dislocation and further damage with only very gentle movement. I spoke with my professors this past week in order to see if there would be an alternative or modified assessment that I could do. They were not open to this suggestion and unwilling to recognize my academic accommodations because they said they only extended to November 30th and did not continue into December. I have since spoken with my academic accommodations advisor and they suggested that I appeal for the dropping of this course without academic penalty.
This injury has caused a great deal of difficulty for me this semester. Being in chronic pain and having limited mobility, while being so far away from home is taking an incredible toll on my mental well-being. I have been struggling greatly with depression and some days I am not quite sure how to continue like this. I also have academic accommodations in place for my mental health and will be including a letter from my therapist and family doctor to further support how the situation with this course has caused a great deal of stress and is making it very difficult for me to cope.
I have always worked very hard to maintain a strong standing in school and this is very difficult for me. Had I known that there was no hope of my injury healing by the end of the semester I would have dropped the course by the Nov 1 deadline but at the time I was still hopeful that I might heal and be able to manage. I did have to drop two other courses in the hopes that lessening the academic stress would help me to heal better but unfortunately it did not help.
I am enclosing the letter from my PhysioTherapist. I will have a letter from my therapist and family doctor by the middle of this week and my parents are co signing this letter. They can be reached if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your consideration,
Fiona Clancey
