Petition Letter: Hello

I am a second year film and drama student. I am 6'7, and my height often impacts my health because neither the human body nor most architecture is built to support my height. This has lead to health conditions like orthostatic hypotension. However, a new health risk that has arrived since I got here is concussions.

Up until I got to Queen's, I have never had a concussion. In March of this year, I hit my head on a sprinkler on the ceiling of a Queen's building and got my first ever concussion. At the end of October, I hit my head again on a doorframe in the same building. Both times I was already ducking, but not enough. I hit my head on the ceilings of school buildings regularly, but it has thankfully only given me two concussions.

My concussion has lead to a lot of struggling in school. Specifically in FILM 240. I actually had an appointment to get academic accommodations, something I had been procrastinating since I got here over a year ago, because of this course half an hour before I got my concussion.

The biggest issues of my concussion were vision issues that made vision blurry, as well as amplifying symptoms I already had from ADHD and depression. My attention span was already awful because of my ADHD, and I'm prescribed 80mg of vyvanse. I rarely take the full 80mg, taking 20-60mg depending on the day and saving the 80mg for days where I have a lot to do (I'm not abusing the medication, my doctor and therapist both know I do this). However, until about this week, the concussion caused my attention span to be so bad that even the full dose of 80mg did almost nothing. On top of that, I was about two weeks into a depressive episode before the concussion, and I knew I hadn't hit the low point yet. The concussion made my depressive episode a lot worse and created a new low. The blurry vision combined with the severe depression and the attention span that was so bad it couldn't be medicated all made school work nearly impossible.

On top of the fact that even before the concussion my depression and ADHD made me struggle in this class more than the others, the assignments are a lot harder to catch up on than any other class I'm in. There are a lot of discussion posts, and even the larger assignments all have peer review components. Though I've tried, I haven't been able to do any work in this class since before my concussion. I don't think it's feasible for me to pass this class, much less catch up completely.

Thank you very much for your time and understanding.

Sincerely,
Jonas
