Petition Letter: APPEAL LETTER
JAN 2023

This past fall semester has easily been one of the most difficult months of my life. Not only is it my last year at undergrad, but I was hospitalized for my sickle cell crisis. Sickle Cell is a chronic illness that impacts the blood ciirculation in one's body. It results in sickle cell crisis that are extremely debilating and leading to hospitalization for weeks.I was in the hospital for the entity of September due to pneumonia and a chest crisis. Pneumonia is a very serious condition that left me going to two hospitals for treatment. After I was discharged from the hospital, I went home to my parents to heal. I came back to Kingston in October and went to classes for two weeks. After reading week, I was positive for COVID and was in isolation for two weeks. With my chronic illness, it was imperative that I properly isolate and fight the virus. Now if that wasn??t enough, the first week of November I was rushed to the hospital for another sickle cell crisis. I was in the hospital for the entirety of November. In November, I had to recieve two blood transfusion as I was extremely week and sick. This was easily the worst crisis I have had in my life. I was hospitalized for three weeks and continuously getting worse.

After I was discharged the second time (first week of December), I was still battling with pain but trying to navigate my course load and somewhat end the semester strong. I was still taking medication and having pain episodes. All my professors tried to accommodate me the best that they could, but I had to finish all coursework in a matter of weeks. Since I was basically hospitalized the entire semester, I had not submitted any assignments and therefore was given a due date to submit them by the end of December. This was no light task as I had over 5 different essays that were meant to be 15 pages. It was all too overwhelming. I am a fighter and was determined to complete the semester so I submitted some assignments. The assignments were not my true potential, as I went to class na hand full of times and did not understand the course content. I am requesting a CR for SOCY 305, as throughout this i still managed to submit my final assignments and sit the final exam. The work was not my true potential and I did poorly, I would like a CR, so my overall GPA would not go down. If you look at my transcript, you can see I have never failed an assignment, let alone a class.I am going to law school in fall and it is imperative that my GPA goes up not down. I have conditional offers and if it goes down it can truly be detrimental. I have worked so hard this semester, throughout all the pain and hospitalization and I am asking for some assistance. I was unable to fully grasp course material which overall lead me to a poor grade. But I did do my best to complete all term work.

I am requesting a late drop for SOCY 301, SOCY 225, AND SOCY 284. I was unable to submit the assignments due to the volume of assignments. Being that I missed 90% of the class, I was unable to learn or have proper access to course material. I believe it is best for me to drop these classes as it is too overwhelming. I believe my case is rare and I am pledging with the committee to have some grace and mercy with me. Navigating being sick and recovering is its own daunting process but adding over 15 late assignments in a small time frame is merely impossible.

I would like to start my last semester fresh. This semester has been extremely stressful and has made me have to change my degree plan with so many missed classes and time. This semester, I am trying to get back into school mode and finish off strong.

Thank you for your consideration I look forward to hearing from you.
