Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am writing this letter to petition the Faculty's decision that I may receive credit standing in ENG 273 (Literature and the Fantastic; Fall, 2022) due to extenuating circumstances experienced in the final two months of the term. I received a passing grade but would like to request that this mark not impact my GPA, as I know that I was not able to complete the course to my own academic standards.
The unforeseen circumstances beyond my control for the sake of this petition is an acute but prolonged illness, with recommended accommodation supported by the enclosed doctor's note, where I was unable to commit the required time to meet this course's academic demands. I would also like to note that the walk-in clinic that I obtained the physician's note from was not willing to comply with the off-campus physician's note template provided, and I do not currently have a family doctor, so hopefully the provided documentation suffices for this petition. I first sought medical intervention on December 7th, 2022, when my condition had not improved after one and a half months and was experiencing a throat infection since December 1st, following my persistent flu-like symptoms since mid-October. My condition caused severe exhaustion, migraines, bacterial infections, and recurrent fever that severely limited my time to both work and study effectively. I am petitioning for this course only, as a non-vocational/interest course in my program, because it took the lowest priority to my more relevant PSYC and PHAR courses to my degree this term. The reason I did not drop this course by the last deadline is because I was expecting my condition to improve in enough time to get back on track with my coursework. Unfortunately, that was not the case and I continued to feel unwell for a period of more than two months. My illness was still impacting my day-to-day life until after the exam period, but my symptoms are currently manageable enough to return to my studies in the winter term.
In terms of a future plan for achieving academic success, my illness has currently improved and feel capable of pursuing my course work for the upcoming winter term. I vow to take appropriate action if I predict that I will be unable to meet my academic demands going forward, including dropping classes in a timely manner or taking a semester off entirely if this type of long-term illness returns. Ideally, I hope to gain a diagnosis from a doctor in the coming weeks, as many of the tests that were conducted in are still inconclusive. With regular meetings with a health professional, I intend to balance my academic goals with my body's physical capabilities, given my hopefully acute condition.
