Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dean Horton and others:

My name is Ryan Melvin and I am writing this appeal to take 9 units of third year core history seminars at the University of Victoria on a letter of Permission to complete my Honours major in history. This past summer, when selecting my courses I consulted with Mrs. Stirton-Massey about how many units I needed take to graduate with a Ba.Hons in History this spring. In our discussion there was some confusion and I thought I had already enrolled in history 419, I was trying to confirm that I need 18 units to graduate, but through communication error Mrs. Stitton thought that was not including the 9 units I was already enrolled in and suggest I only needed 9 units to graduate, I then consulted Solus and it showed I had completed 18 out 27 units so I thought the class I was enrolled in, history 419 would satisfy the remaining units needed. The problem did not come to attention until I applied to graduate in late February, I then learned that I did not have the required number of units to graduate. When discussing my options to graduate I received advice from Mrs. Labelle to talk to Dr. Walker and see if I would be able to take the remaining 9 units of core seminar remaining at the University of Victoria. Sine then I have revived from Dr. Walker the History undergraduate chair a letter of support to take the remaining units at the University of Victoria and that the seminars there meet the queens requirements. The reason that I wish to take the courses at the University of Victoria is financial, as my family is in Victoria and it would cost considerably less than to return to Queens for 9 units of courses. The financial hardship is brought on by distance as the flights required can cost up to 1500, on top of living expenses and rent that would be need to paid, which I can not afford myself, an neither can my parents, as my father lost his pervious employment in November of 2013 and did not regain employment until late march 2014 and this caused a large amount of financial hardship on myself and my family. As another semester would cost up to 10,000 for me to return to finish the 9 units. I would like to appeal to take these 9 units at the University of Victoria, in order to avoid more debt than I have already accumulated. Thank you for considering my appeal.

Sincerely Ryan Melvin
