Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am looking to add an online course to keep a full course load of five courses. Queen's defines a full course load as nine units or three classes. However, I am looking to apply to the veterinary medicine program at the University of Guelph, and they define a full course load as five one-semester courses.

I was in five courses until a couple of hours before the financial drop deadline, but this course did not fulfil any academic requirements for my degree here at Queens or prerequisites for the program at Guelph. I tried looking through the available offerings multiple times on the last day to add. However, the site was almost unusable, likely due to many people in a similar situation to me. I did not contact SOLUS support as it was outside of office hours.

I decided it would be best to drop the course that didn't help me to ensure there was no financial penalty and attempt to look through the catalogue once things had calmed down. I did just that and found a course I could use to further my academic journey. BCHM 270 is a course in which I have met every prerequisite and is online, meaning no missed tutorials/labs.

Missing the add date was a careless mistake on my part, and for any inconvenience, this has caused, I apologize. I strongly urge you to allow me to add this course because if I do not meet the UofG full course load, this entire semester will be ineligible on my application. However, I understand and accept any decisions made regarding this application.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My academic plan moving forward, should I be allowed into this course, would be centred on catching up. I will dedicate a large portion of my time to getting to the week three content of the modules. I do have a sizable schedule, but my mornings are virtually free. I will use this time for the BCHM 270 course content. I am up-to-date in all of my other courses, and I am confident that with some hard work, I can catch up in this course without affecting my performance in any others. Once I have made it to week three, I will move forward in this course as it was designed, weaving it into my weekly schedule.

Another aspect of my academic plan would be more careful planning with course selection and add/drop deadlines. I have never made a mistake like this, and I plan never to again. I will carefully evaluate how each course fits into my academic goals and requirements before adding. I will also completely investigate the consequences of dropping courses. I now know that I need to keep five courses at all times. I will not make this mistake again.
