Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to drop RELS 312 (Christian Feminist Theology) and RELS 321(Greek and Roman Religions), which I studied in the winter term 2015. I have decided to drop these courses since I could not complete course materials due to my extenuating circumstances of depression, psychological challenges and physical illness caused by stressful situations. In addition, receiving failing grades for these courses will influence my grade severely.
This winter term, especially since the end of February, I have been experiencing depression, which disabled me to perform well academically. Moreover, the psychological challenge affected my physical health also, causing severe muscle tension, headache, heart and chest pain, and high blood pressure.
For my physical pain, I have visited the Kingston General Hospital and performed blood and electrocardiographic diagnosis. I have received Ketorolac treatment for my chest pain, and the doctor diagnosed the physical pain derived from psychological situations. For my psychological challenge, I have consulted the situation with my psychoanalyst, Dr. Hea-Kyoung Koh, who has been counselling for a year now. Dr. Koh has advised me to drop the courses. Also, I have consulted with the professors who taught the courses, Dr. Richard Ascough and Dr. Tracy Trothen, and they are fully supportive of making the appeal to drop.
To cope with my depression, I will be visiting my home country, South Korea to be with my family and will be continuing psychoanalytic counselling with my personal counsellor. Also, while I am there, I will be conducting a health examination to diagnose the physical problems properly. Academically, since took a term off in Fall 2013, caused by severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that I had experienced at the time, I will be taking extra terms in the 2015-2016 year. I will be taking Queen's University's online courses this summer term to lighten and divide the workload for the upcoming fall term. Also, if the courses are offered again next academic year, I will be retaking these courses.
I appreciate your time to read my letter and consider my appeal to drop courses.
Sincerely,
Yong Wook Kim
