Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear, Whomever it may concern,

I am writing to appeal for the course selection and deselection I made on Friday, Jan 20th. At 2:30 pm, I have taken a 100THC editable candy. Before Friday, I had already decided to change my academic plan to accommodate my summer internship, and I plan to drop ASCX400 because it no longer fits my educational program. I also plan to delay my graduation and take a 5th year at Queens in the 2023-2024 school year. I also plan to remain in POLS347 as it fits my academic plan, and I've already been taking the class for two weeks.

It was the first time I consumed edible candy early Friday at 2:30 pm, not knowing that it had 200 THC in it. Given that it was my first time consuming edible, I had no clue it would trigger a severe panic/anxiety attack as I was previously clinically diagnosed with periodic anxiety and depression by Mount Sinai in 2017. Instead, I became highly anxious, started crying, and became consumed by unworthiness, past trauma, and fear for the future. Even though I was suffering from anxiety, I remember that I needed to drop ASCX400 on my to-do list. And I attempted to do this without success due to the need for the department's permission. As a result, later in the evening, I became even more anxious to send multiple emails to the experimental learning & arts department, fearing that I would ruin my future. Finally, in sheer panic and mental unstableness, I started questioning everything and accidentally enrolled in POLS397 and dropped POLS347. My friend took away the computer afterwards due to obsessiveness and forced me to lie on my bed as I was visibly shaking and hyperventilating.

For the next few hours, as my situation worsened, my friend attended to me while my mood switched between hysterically crying, depression, and exhaustion until I finally fell asleep later in the night.

On Saturday, I realize my mistake is no longer reversible. Also, I continue to experience the lingering effect of the anxiety/panic attack in which I feel hopeless and that my worst insecurity attacks me in every corner. I could also not get a doctor during that time as student wellness and Artsci registration was not open.

I waited till Monday to go to Artsci register to ask for appeal information and Student Wellness Service to seek help from a doctor/ mental health professional for medication and counselling. This is because I continued to feel highly anxious after the weed-induced panic attack I experienced on Friday.

Sincerely,
Casandra Choi

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If approved, my academic plan will contain POLS347, POLS 482, and POLS590B. As I adjust my academic plan to accommodate the summer internship, I will delay my graduation next term and become a part-time student at Queens. I doubt I will be able to complete these courses as the incident I experience is a short-term illness. To better my mental health, I am also working with mental professionals in Student Wellness Service to treat my mental health illness further. Also, I was already in POLS347 for two weeks and am looking forward to continuing to attend class during the application process period.
