Dear Bruno,
Thank you for your petition regarding a Final Exam deferral in CHEM 211 (F25). I have carefully reviewed your request and, while I am unable to grant your petition, I want to assure you that your circumstances were considered thoughtfully and with care as part of the decision making process.
Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 1.7.1.6 (Requests for an Extension of an Exam Deferral) outlines that a student affected by extenuating circumstances who cannot write an exam as scheduled may request academic consideration and ask the course instructor for an exam deferral. Instructors may approve a deferral for up to one full term following the completion of a course. Where a student is unable to write the deferred exam due to the same or different extenuating circumstances, any request for an additional deferral must be made by petition to the Associate Dean (Academic) and must be supported by appropriate documentation. The instructor is consulted to confirm their agreement and availability to support a further deferral. If the instructor cannot support an extension of an exam deferral, the student may be encouraged to consider other petition options instead.
I understand that, due to multiple documented unexpected extenuating circumstances, you were unable to write the final exam in CHEM 211 as originally scheduled in December 2025, or during the subsequent deferral periods in January and May 2026.
In your current petition, you have requested a further exam deferral until late Summer 2026 due to the ongoing impacts of these circumstances. While I acknowledge this request, the instructor of CHEM 211 (F25) has confirmed that they are not available to facilitate any additional exam deferrals beyond the existing deferral period. As instructor support is required under the regulation, I am unable to grant this request.
That said, the instructor of CHEM 211 (F25) has confirmed that you have met the learning outcomes of the course based on the completed coursework, excluding the final exam. In light of this, I am prepared to permit Aegrotat Standing in this course as an alternative outcome. A replacement grade of A plus, based on the 55% of the course you were able to complete, would replace the existing grade on your transcript and would be accompanied by the notation “Aegrotat: estimated grade.” If you wish to accept this option, please contact asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 15 business days of the date of this letter. This is the only accommodation available to us within the current university policies.
