I will also allow you to drop PHIL 111 (FW22/23), CISC 101 (S23), CISC 101 (F23) and ARTH 277 (F24) after the academic deadline without requiring a subsequent petition request. If there are additional courses that you would like to petition from these terms, you may now access on the on-line petition portal at queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/student-services/academic-petitions-and-appeals to submit your new request under the appropriate category such as, Credit Standing.
Credit standing is assigned in cases where the student completed all of the graded components in the course and earned a passing grade, but due to extenuating circumstances, did not perform as well as would have been expected under normal circumstances.
Please know that as instructors are only obligated to keep information related to a student’s grades for 1 year after the term ending, it may not be possible to determine eligibility for Credit Standing in courses from any terms prior to the 2025 Summer term.
Your new petition request should include a letter that outlines how each course was affected by extenuating circumstances and why you didn’t drop them by the academic deadline.
In addition to confirming the timeline of the circumstance, it is important that your documentation also outlines the academic impacts during the terms that you are petitioning.
If you have any questions about your subsequent petition request, please meet with an Academic Advisor for support.
Going forward, you should know that it is your responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on your coursework prior to the drop deadline of the term. If you fall behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by deadline. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding.
