Dear Mr. Stover:

I have carefully considered your appeal to drop PSYC 100B (W 2014) past the academic deadline, receive Credit standing in GRMN 101 (F 2013), FILM 110B, POLS 110B and SOCY 122B (W 2014) as well as waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:

1. I will grant your request to drop PSYC 100 past the academic deadline.

2. I will grant your request to receive Credit standing in FILM 110, POLS 110 and GRMN 101. Your grades in these courses will appear on your transcript as CR.

3. I will deny your request to receive Credit standing in SOCY 122 because you have not completed all of the work required for the course and earned a passing grade. See Academic Regulation 10.2.2: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/academic-calendars/regulations/academic-regulations/regulation-10 You have been assigned an IN grade in this course so you still have the option of submitting late work for this course over the summer. If you plan to proceed with this, I would suggest that you contact Dr. Beamish to make the appropriate arrangements for submitting your outstanding work. As an alternative option, I would also be willing to allow you to drop this course past the academic deadline. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision letter to confirm and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.

4. As a result of your grade changes in the courses above, your GPA is now above 1.60, therefore the €œRequired to Withdraw for One Year€ ruling will be removed altogether as it no longer applies. You currently remain in good academic standing and you are eligible to return to your studies.

I would recommend that you seek some advice and guidance on study skills and strategies from the Learning Commons in Stuffer Library upon your return to campus in September.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit a letter of intent to appeal within 21 days of receiving this decision. Appeal forms are available from this office (F200 Mackintosh-Corry Hall) or on the web: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/help/forms General information on appeals is available at http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/academics/academic-appeals. You may contact Mr. Harry Smith, Dispute Resolution Mechanisms Coordinator for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative. His office is located in room 153 Richardson Hall and he can be reached by phone (533-6495) or e-mail (drm@queensu.ca).

Upon returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan. I hope that you will take advantage of the variety of support services available to you at Queen's. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (F200 Mackintosh-Corry Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Health, Counselling and Disabilities Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.

If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

J. Hugh Horton, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
