Dear Mr. McCallum:

I have carefully considered your appeal to receive an extension of your incomplete grades in MATH 121 (FW 2014/15) and STAT 263 (S 2015). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.

As a part of these appeals, we routinely seek feedback from the course instructors. In your particular case, both instructors have indicated that a lot of time has passed since you have taken these courses and while they are very sympathetic to your circumstances, they feel that it would ultimately be in your best academic interests to drop these courses and retake them again later. After reviewing your medical documentation and your current transcript, I agree with this. Your physician€™s letter seems to indicate that you are not yet fully recovered and while I am pleased to hear that you are actively seeking help, I remained concerned about the amount of incomplete work that is accumulating (CISC 124) and new courses you are taking for the winter term. Please ensure that you continue to monitor your health and your academic progress very carefully over the winter term and drop any courses as needed within the academic deadlines. The final day to drop a winter term course is Friday, February 26.

While I am denying this particular request, I do recognize that your health challenges have significantly impacted your academic performance and I would instead like to offer an alternative option. Given your circumstances, I would be prepared to allow you to drop MATH 121 and STAT 263 past the academic deadline instead. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision letter and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent. Guidelines for appealing to the Board of Studies and the appeal form can be found at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€) Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact Mr. Harry Smith, Office of the Ombudsperson for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative. His office is located in room 421 Robert Sutherland Hall and he can be reached by phone (533-6495) or e-mail (ombuds@queensu.ca).

Sincerely,

Johanne Bénard, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
