Dear Ms. Thompson:
I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request with a condition in place. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University but on part-time basis.
Note that as a part-time student you will only be allowed a maximum of 18.0 units in the Fall-Winter session with no more than 9.0 units per term. It is my hope that the slower pace of part-time study will allow you to successfully raise your GPA and meet the requirements to graduate.
If there is an improvement in your academic performance by the end of the academic year and you feel ready to take on a heavier course load, you may schedule an appointment to meet with me and I will consider changing your status at that time.
In order to reactivate your student file, you must complete a €œReturn to Studies€ form: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/sites/default/files/return_to_studies.pdf and return it to our office as soon as possible. Please ensure you indicate your desired degree program and plan (concentration). Once our office has received departmental approval of your degree plan, your file will be reactivated. As you might be aware, the academic regulations and grading system changed at Queen€™s in 2012. Academic Regulation 13 currently states that at the end of each Winter Term in which a student has attempted 18.0 or more units since the time of their previous assessment, that student is assessed for academic progression. If, at the time of this assessment, the GPA is below 1.60 an academic sanction is triggered. In your case, since you have a previous requirement to withdraw on your record, that sanction would be a requirement to withdraw for a further three years.
Your current GPA is 0.99 so it will be difficult for you to raise it to 1.60 in the minimum requirements you have left to complete. You currently require:
1. 33.0 units minimum in courses, including:
GNDS 215/3.0 units
Other GNDS, GNDS Option courses/9.0 units
Elective courses/21.0 units
2. You cannot raise your GPA to 1.60 without either repeating courses, or taking more than 33.0 units in courses or appealing to drop some past failed courses.
- If you repeat 12.0 units of failed courses, you can reach a GPA of 1.60 with an average grade of A- on all courses taken from this point forward.
- If you repeat 15.0 to 18.0 units of failed courses, you can reach a GPA of 1.60 with an average grade of B+ on all courses taken from this point forward.
- If you appeal successfully to drop the failed courses in the winter 2013 term, that will also help increase your GPA (see http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals for further information on how to make this appeal or schedule an appointment to speak with an academic advisor by calling 613-533-2470).

A cumulative GPA of 1.60 is required to graduate with a three-year General degree. As part of your return to studies, you may wish to seek academic counselling from an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services office to go over your Program Requirements as well. Appointments can be made by dropping in to our office (Main Floor Dunning Hall) or by phoning 533-2470. You may also wish to contact your Department of concentration for advice on the successful completion of your academic program. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Student Wellness Services located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street also offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
I hope that you will take advantage of the support services available to you at Queen's. In returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan.
