Dear Mr. Barboutsis:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop SOCY 122B, GPHY 101 (W 2015), HIST 255 (F 2015), HIST 206, HIST 208, HIST 209, HIST 243, HIST 245 and HIST 250 (W 2016) (W 2013) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in CLST 102 (F 2014) and PHIL 115B (W 2015). After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.
I would like to note that dropping this many courses long after the drop deadlines is an extraordinary action. However, I felt that your circumstances were extenuating and the fact that you have not been able to seek the appropriate help until now warranted waiving the academic regulations. I am pleased to hear that you have now initiated the process of seeking help and I encourage you to continue with this throughout the school year. Appointments with a counsellor are available free of charge through Student Wellness Services and can be booked by calling (613) 533-2506.
I would further like to note that it is very important for you to manage your academics carefully from this point forward. The appeal system is not designed to compensate for situations that are ongoing in nature, and which remain unresolved such that they continue to impact a student€™s academic performance. I recommend in the future, that you will assess your ability to complete each course that you take before the deadline to drop each term and make a proactive decision based on your current situation and extent of completion of each course. It is important for students to assume this responsibility in cases where the extenuating circumstances are not yet resolved or are not well managed. I am hopeful that in the future you will make every effort to closely monitor the drop deadlines outlined in Important Dates Section on the Arts and Science web page and drop any courses, as needed, within them. These deadlines have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students and to facilitate the timely completion of university studies at Queen's.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
Yours sincerely,
Johanne Bénard, Ph.D.
