Mr. Dylan Whitaker

Dear Mr. Whitaker:

I have carefully considered your appeal to drop ANAT 100 (F 2015) and ENGL 100B (W 2016) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided the following:

I will grant your request to drop ENGL 100B (W 2016) past the academic deadline. The documentation supplied confirms that the extenuating circumstances you experienced over the winter term had a significant impact on your ability to successfully complete this course.

However, I must deny your request to drop ANAT 100 (F 2015) past the academic deadline. I do fully acknowledge and understand your frustration around the circumstances of accessing the on-line course materials. I also understand that without receiving these materials, it would be very difficult indeed to successfully complete this course. I did investigate this issue with the Continuing and Distance Studies office as well as with McGraw Hill Education to understand how you encountered this problem and they confirmed that if a student purchases a used copy of the textbook, they would likely need to purchase an access code separately, which does cost 123.95. If a student has any trouble with the online access code, the instructor or TA contacts McGraw Hill to resolve the issue or the student can return the book to the Campus Bookstore and the manager will work with McGraw Hill to resolve the issue. I have been assured that these issues are resolved very quickly. Very unfortunately, I must conclude from this investigation that it appears you failed to follow up on the issue until the course was already well underway and assignments were due. While the problem with accessing the online materials in and of itself is extenuating, your ability to follow up and resolve the issue in a timely manner or drop the course by the November 6 deadline was your responsibility and was within your personal control.

I will also note that you have requested to receive transfer credit for courses taken on a letter of permission. Academic Regulation 14.6 states, €œTo transfer credit to Queen€™s
for a class taken elsewhere, a passing final grade equivalent to at least C at Queem€™s (minimum grade of 63 on percentage-based scale) must be obtained, unless otherwise stated on the letter of permission. The transfer credit, not the grade achieved, will be transferred to the student€™s record at Queen€™s (see Academic Regulation 10). This regulation cannot be appealed so I am not able to hear this request.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent. Guidelines for appealing to the Board of Studies and the appeal form can be found at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€) Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact Mr. Harry Smith, Office of the Ombudsman for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative. His office is located in room 421 Robert Sutherland Hall and he can be reached by phone (533-6495) or e-mail (ombuds@queensu.ca).

Sincerely,

Johanne Bénard, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
