Dear Ms. McLean:

I have carefully considered your request to have your appeal heard after the 21-day timeline for submission, and have decided, based on the circumstances you refer to in your letter of appeal, to waive the timeline.

I have subsequently considered your appeal requesting to drop ENGL 250B, HIST 272B (S 2011), ENGL 235, ENGL 237, HIST 240 (F 2011), ENGL 244, HIST 252, HIST 281, HIST 365, CLST 201 and ENGL 292B (W 2014) past the academic deadline. After carefully reviewing your file I have decided to grant your appeal. As a result of this decision, your transcript has been reassessed and the Academic Probation ruling of May 23, 2012 and the Required to Withdraw for One Year ruling of May 22, 2014 will be removed as they now no longer apply. You may resume your studies with the following condition noted below.

Due to the nature of your ongoing difficulties, I have made the decision to place you on part-time status. Note that as a part-time student you will only be allowed a maximum of 18.0 units in the Fall-Winter session with no more than 9.0 units per term. However, I would strongly recommend that you take no more than two courses per term in the fall and winter and no more than one course over the summer term until your personal challenges are fully resolved.

In order to be eligible to progress from part-time to full-time studies, you must fulfill the following conditions:

1. Completed a minimum of 24.0 Queen's credit units, excluding repeated courses, from the time at which they were admitted part-time on a degree Program; and
2. Achieved a minimum Cumulative GPA of 1.90;
OR

1. Completed a minimum of 18.0 Queen's credit units, excluding repeated courses, from the time at which they were admitted part-time on a degree Program; and
2. Achieved a minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.90.

It is my hope that the slower pace of part-time study will allow you sufficient time to remedy the personal and academic difficulties you have faced in the past and thereby enable you to be more successful in your future studies. See http://www.queensu.ca/admission/apply/current/pttoft.html for more on the movement from part-time to full-time study.

Upon returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan. I hope that you will take advantage of the variety of support services available to you at Queen's. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (F200 Mackintosh-Corry Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Health, Counselling and Disabilities Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.

If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

J. Hugh Horton, Ph.D.
