Dear Ms. Wang:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop MATH 280 (F 2016) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
The deadlines for dropping courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
Sleeping in and missing your exam is certainly very unfortunate and I am sorry to hear that it resulted in you failing MATH 280. However, while difficult, this is not the type of circumstance beyond your personal control that would reasonably allow me to waive the academic regulations.
In reviewing your transcript I see that you are currently on academic probation and you carried an exceptionally heavy course load in the summer and fall terms. This strategy does not appear to have been successful as your GPA has not shown any improvement (it is currently 0.95). You are registered in 6 difficult courses over the current term and I would strongly suggest that your consider reducing your course load to a more manageable level. Taking fewer courses will allow yourself the proper amount of time needed to dedicate to each course and should result in achieving the grades you need to raise your GPA. The last day to drop a winter term course is Friday, March 3. I would also suggest that you consider scheduling an appointment with an academic advisor to discuss some resources available on campus to help you with your learning. Appointments can be made by calling 613-533-2470.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
