Dear Mr. Lyskov:
I have carefully considered your appeal to add MATH 112 and CISC 235 (W 2017) after the academic deadline as well as receive Aegrotat standing in BIOL 102 (F 2016) and Credit standing in CISC 124 (F 2016). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1. Based on your extenuating circumstances from the fall term, I will grant your request to receive Credit standing in CISC 124.
Your grade in this course will appear on your transcript as CR.
2. I unfortunately, must deny your request for Aegrotat standing in BIOL 102 because you are not eligible for this grade notation.
To be eligible for Aegrotat standing, the student must have completed at least 60 of the work required, must have a passing grade on the work completed and met the learning outcomes of the course. According to your instructor, you have only completed 31 of the work for BIOL 102 and this is not enough to determine whether or not you have met the learning outcomes. Given your extenuating circumstances that prevented you from successfully completing this course, I would however, be willing to allow you to drop BIOL 102 late instead. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
3. I must deny your request to add MATH 112 and CISC 235 past the academic deadline.
The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload. In the absence of extenuating circumstances, beyond your control, which would have prevented you from meeting the add deadline as published in the Arts and Science Calendar, I can not reasonably waive the Faculty Regulation.
Your appeal letter states that you were enrolled in both MATH 112 and CISC 235 and you made the decision to drop these courses but realized later that this was a mistake. Your SOLUS activity record shows that you originally added both courses during the course selection period in
July and dropped them shortly after. You added them again on December 28 during the add-drop period (and placed on the waitlist for MATH 112 but it was successfully added on January 4). You then dropped both courses on January 21, one day past the deadline to drop courses for a full tuition refund. While I understand that you regret this decision, it is not considered to be a circumstance beyond your control that would warrant waiving the deadlines.
You have also not included any kind of academic plan to explain how you will catch up on the missing material already covered in the first 4 weeks of class or what degree program you plan to use these courses toward. From your file, it appears that you planned to switch into an online degree in Health Sciences in December and registered in courses for that Plan. It then appears that in late January you planned to withdraw for the winter term. Then, a week later you appealed to re-add the courses you dropped. Given your indecisiveness concerning these courses and what academic direction you wish to take in general, I not convinced that it is in your best academic interests to reenroll and attempt to catch up on these courses this late into the term.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
