Decision Letter
Appeal Number: 3026
Decision Date: March 31, 2017
Associate Dean: Sue Blake
Student Name: Kate Thomas
Student Email: kate.thomas@queensu.ca
Course: ENGL100
Term: Summer
Year: 2016
Category: Request credit (CR) standing in a course or courses
Instructor: Dr. Robert G May
Dear Ms. Thomas:
I have carefully considered your request to have your appeal heard after the one term timeline for submission. Based on the circumstances you refer to in your letter of appeal, I have decided to waive the timeline and grant your request to drop ENGL 100 (FW 2016/17) past the academic deadline. I must however, deny your request to receive Credit standing in ENGL 100 from the Summer 2016 term.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.2.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower€. The Calendar goes on to stress that Credit standing will only be granted under documented exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond her control.
Your appeal letter makes reference to €œcircumstances that were present in your life outside of Queen€™s€ but the documentation supplied does not speak to the timeline or severity of your anxiety or the specific impact that it had on your coursework at the time.
I will also point out that replacing your grade in ENGL 100 with CR will not allow you to enroll in ENGL 200. The prerequisite for ENGL 200 is a grade of C, which is not equivalent to Credit Standing. You will need to request permission from the Undergraduate Chair of the English Department to request to waive any course prerequisites.
You may request a tuition fee refund in ENGL 100 from the current year by submitting this form to the Office of the University Registrar:
