Dear Ms. Lin:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop GEOL 102 (F 2016) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in GNDS 215 (F 2016). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I will grant your request to drop GEOL 102 past the academic deadline.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
2. I will deny your request to receive Credit standing in GNDS 215.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.2.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower€. The Calendar goes on to stress that Credit standing will only be granted under exceptional circumstances.
While your appeal does demonstrate that you had some extenuating circumstances over the fall term, there is no clear documentation supplied to confirm how much your performance in GNDS 215 was directly affected by them. In reviewing your transcript, it appears that your grade in this course is generally consistent with your academic performance from previous terms. Without further evidence to show that you would have performed significantly better in GNDS 215 in the absence of any extenuating circumstances, I cannot reasonably allow a CR grade.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
