Dear Mr. Park:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive an extension of your incomplete grade in MATH 121 (Fall/Winter 2013/14). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, incomplete grades expire at the end of the following term in which the course was offered (in your case, your incomplete grade in MATH 121 expired on September 15, 2014). The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records and waiving academic regulations without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
Your appeal does not describe any circumstances that are extenuating in nature to explain why you were not able to write your deferred exam on the September date offered by Dr. Ableson. Furthermore, there is no documentation supplied to confirm the presence of any extenuating circumstances that prevented you from writing your deferred exam. For these reasons I cannot allow your request.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit a letter of intent to appeal within 21 days of receiving this decision.
