Dear Mr. Benasa:

I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.

I would like to note that this is a lenient decision, acknowledging that you were a first year student and likely inexperienced in what resources were available to help you and how to access them. I also accept that the transition from high to university and the adjustment to a new lifestyle in a new community can be quite difficult. However, over the next year you must ensure that you access the resources to receive any help you need. You must also assess your ability to complete each course you take before the deadline to drop each term and make a proactive decision based on your current circumstances and extent of completion of each course. It is important for students to assume this responsibility in cases where the extenuating circumstances are not yet fully resolved. If you would like some advice or information to help you make these decisions, please schedule an appointment to meet with an academic advisor, prior to the drop deadlines. We can be reached at 613-533-2470. I would also suggest that you consider taking a reduced course load of 3 or 4 courses per term next year to help ensure that you can comfortably handle the workload until the adjustment issues have been fully resolved and you are able to take on more.

Please read carefully the document to follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

Upon returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan. I hope that you will take advantage of the variety of support services available to you at Queen's. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Student Wellness Services Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.

If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

Johanne Bénard, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
