Dear Mr. Malik:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat standing in WRIT 120 (S 2017). After reviewing your file I must unfortunately deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all of the work of the course.€ The Appeal Regulations go on to stress that Aegrotat standing will only be granted due to extenuating circumstances€. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond her control.
While your appeal does certainly describe some significant personal challenges, you have not completed enough work in WRIT 120 to be eligible for Aegrotat standing and you have not met the learning outcomes for the course. Professor Kinderman confirmed that you have completed 25 per cent of the required work with a passing grade (Assignment 4 and Forum 3 worth a combined 25 of your final grade. You completed Assignment 1 and 2 but failed both). A minimum of 60 per cent of the course must be completed with a passing grade and your must have demonstrated that you met the learning outcomes to be eligible for Aegrotat standing. Further, there is no explanation supplied as to why you were not able to drop this course by the drop deadline.
It appears from your Academic Requirements report that you require a further 6.0 units to graduate with your Bachelor of Arts (General) degree in Gender Studies: GNDS 125 and 3.0 units of electives with a minimum grade of C to raise your GPA to 1.60 (the minimum threshold needed to graduate). I would encourage you to complete these last requirements so you can receive your Queen€™s degree.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
