Dear Ms. Beazer:

As per standard practice, I have reviewed your appeal before it is forwarded to the Board of Studies for consideration. I have carefully reviewed my decision and based on the new documentation you supplied, I have decided to change my original decision and grant your request to drop ASTR 101and HIST 260 (S 2016) past the academic deadline.

I would like to note that this is a lenient decision on my part. Although your documentation confirms your chronic pain issue, this is an ongoing condition that you have had for a long time and judging from your physician note, had significantly affected your ability to participate shortly after these courses began (May 13, as per your documentation). Students with chronic health issues are expected to register with Accessibility Services to receive any academic accommodations required to enable them to equally participate along with their peers in a course. They are also expected to register in a course load that they can realistically handle and monitor their progress carefully to ensure that they can successfully complete all of the requirements. If they are unable to do so, students are expected to drop courses within the deadlines. You had until June 24, 2016 to assess your progress, judge whether or not you could complete these courses successfully and determine whether or not you should drop them. Given all the issues you encountered at the time and the state of your health, you should have dropped your courses.
Moving forward, you must register with Accessibility Services and abide by the drop deadlines.
The Faculty Office does not have jurisdiction over financial decisions. Note that any change in academic registration (e.g. dropping courses) may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding such as OSAP, scholarships, or bursaries. Please consult with the Student Awards Office (Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall) to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load. A change in academic registration may also affect a student€™s enrollment status as a full or part-time student, eligibility for student visas, or benefits through external agencies.
