Dear Ms. Beckman:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop ECON 222, ECON 290 (F 2016) and ECON 212 (W 2017) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in MATH 126 and PSYC 235 (FW 2016/17) and receive Aegrotat standing in ECON 222, ECON 290 (F 2016) and ECON 212 (W 2017). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this as well as requests to change grades to Credit and/or Aegrotat standing will only be granted due to €œextenuating circumstances.€ The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
The deadlines for dropping courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
While you have supplied some documentation to confirm your grandfather€™s passing as well as a letter from your mother, it is unfortunately not sufficient. To warrant dropping classes late and changing grades, we require some documentation from a healthcare professional to confirm the timeline and severity of your personal difficulties surrounding the death of your grandfather and well as explain the specific impact these difficulties had on your classes and your ability to drop them within the academic deadlines.
I will also note that to be eligible for Aegrotat standing, a student must have completed at least 60 of the work required for the course, has met the learning outcomes and achieved a passing grade on the work completed to date. Your instructors in ECON 222, ECON 290 and ECON 212 have confirmed that you have not met the conditions to be eligible for Aegrotat standing in these courses.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
