Dear Ms. Saunders:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat standing in PHYS P20 (F 2017). After reviewing your file I must unfortunately deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work and has achieved the learning outcomes of the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all of the work of the course.€ The Appeal Regulations go on to stress that Aegrotat standing will only be granted due to extenuating circumstances€. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond her control.
While your appeal does certainly describe some circumstances that are extenuating in nature and there is supporting documentation to confirm them, your appeal does not adequately demonstrate that you are incapable of completing PHYS P20. Whenever possible, it is preferred that students finish the requirements of a course, especially in the case of an online course where often the strongest indicator of meeting learning outcomes is determined through writing a proctored exam. Your medical note dated November 21, 2017, states that you are unfit to write exams for one month and you are continuing your studies in your MATH 121 class so I assume that you are now fit to prepare for and write an exam in PHYS P20. If you would like to pursue this option, please contact your instructor within the next week to make the appropriate arrangements.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
