I have carefully considered your appeal to drop BIOL 205, CHEM 211, CHEM 212 (F 2013) and MATH 281 (W 2017) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. Based on the documentation supplied, I will grant your request to drop MATH 281 (W 2017) past the academic deadline.
2. I must deny your request to drop BIOL 205, CHEM 211, CHEM 212 (F 2013) past the academic deadline.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
The deadlines for dropping courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
The documentation supplied by Dr. Go is unfortunately not sufficient to warrant dropping your courses taken in 2013 as it is based on your self-report and not a first-hand assessment of your health at the time. It also fails to adequately confirm the full timeline and severity of your circumstances from the 2013 fall term as well as the specific impact that the circumstances had on these courses. Without such confirmation, I am not able to grant these late drops.
Please remember that the appeals system is not designed to compensate for chronic health conditions that are ongoing in nature. Moving forward, you must register with Queen€™s Accessibility Services and work with your accessibility advisor to ensure that you have the accommodations in place that you need and that you are carrying a workload that you can comfortably handle. If you feel that you cannot achieve the level of success you are expecting in a course, you must take responsibility of dropping courses by the week 8 deadlines.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
